So… what exactly is a Community Living Room?

In this new blog, Fenland Village Agent, Lucille Bingham, explains exactly what a Community Living Room is.
Imagine walking into a warm, welcoming space where the kettle’s always on, the smiles are genuine, and the pace is just a little slower. That’s the essence of a Community Living Room.
At its heart, a Community Living Room is a safe, friendly place where anyone can drop in, take a breath, have a chat, or simply sit and be. There’s no pressure, no agenda — just a comfortable space where you’re free to be yourself.
These spaces are set up in village halls, community centres, and other local venues across Fenland, South and East Cambridgeshire, and they’re often run by volunteers who are passionate about bringing people together. Whether you’re looking for company, a cuppa, or just somewhere warm to sit for a while, the door is open.
You’ll often find one of our Village Agents there too — a friendly face ready to lend a hand. They can help connect you with your local community, support you in accessing services, and assist with all sorts of practical things — from renewing a bus pass or applying for a Blue Badge to something a little more personal. We’re always happy to help, even if it’s just to share a chat and a biscuit.
There’s often a little something going on too — perhaps a quiz, a friendly game of bingo, or even a visit from a guest speaker. You might hear useful tips from the local Fire Community Officer about staying safe at home, or get a hands-on demo from St John Ambulance on how to use a defibrillator. It’s all part of making these spaces welcoming, informative and just a little bit special.
It’s more than just a room — it’s a small act of kindness with a big impact. Community Living Rooms help tackle loneliness, support wellbeing and create connections where they matter most: right in the heart of our towns and villages.
So, if you see a sign for a Community Living Room in your area, pop in. You’ll be greeted with a smile, a hot drink and maybe even a biscuit (or two). Because everyone deserves a place to feel at home.
