West Wratting Village Hall achieves Hallmark 1

West Wratting Village Hall has achieved Hallmark 1, the first level of the nationally recognised quality standard for village halls, following an assessment visit in March 2026.

Delivered locally by Cambridgeshire ACRE, the Hallmark scheme supports community buildings to be well managed, legally compliant and sustainable. Hallmark 1 focuses on the essentials of charity administration and governance. Achieving this level demonstrates that the foundations are in place – including clear policies, robust record keeping and an active, accountable trustee committee.

For West Wratting Village Hall, the award reflects both current practice and a long-standing commitment to community life. The hall has its roots in the former Foresters’ Hall and holds a rich archive documenting local events, fundraising and village activity over many years. Today, it continues to serve as a hub for residents, hosting clubs, meetings and social opportunities for people of all ages.

The Hallmark assessment recognised the strength of the management committee and the continuity of local stewardship. Trustees were noted for maintaining a well-run, welcoming space and for sustaining a tradition of volunteer-led care that has kept the hall central to village life.

Hayley Neal, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire ACRE, said:

“Achieving Hallmark 1 is a significant milestone and a deserved recognition of the care and commitment shown by the trustees of West Wratting Village Hall. The hall has a long and valued place in the life of the village, and the current committee is clearly continuing that tradition. Volunteers contribute a considerable amount of time behind the scenes, often without recognition. Hallmark provides a way to acknowledge that contribution and the standard of management that underpins it.”

Martin Davey, Chairperson at West Wratting Village Hall added:

“We are really pleased to have achieved Hallmark 1. The process gave us reassurance that the basics are in place and that we are managing the hall well for the benefit of the whole village and the surrounding area. Everything the hall does relies on volunteers, past and present, and this recognition means a lot to everyone who gives their time to keep the hall welcoming, well run and at the heart of community life in West Wratting.”

For Cambridgeshire ACRE, the Hallmark scheme is both a practical improvement tool and a form of recognition. The assessment process offers committees a structured check of governance and compliance, alongside tailored guidance to strengthen resilience and reduce risk.

At a time when many village halls are managing increased costs and pressures on volunteer capacity, schemes such as Hallmark provide a clear framework for maintaining standards while planning for the future. They also highlight the often unseen contribution of trustees, whose work ensures these community assets remain open and viable.
