Reducing sewer blockages in Soham: Cambridgeshire ACRE supports ‘Just Bin It’
Cambridgeshire ACRE is teaming up with Anglian Water to spread the Just Bin It message in Soham. It’s a simple idea that will help stop blockages, keep nasty smells away, and prevent flooding in the town. Soham has had more sewer blockages than usual, so it’s the perfect place to focus this campaign.
The goal? To help everyone understand how what we flush or pour down the drain affects the pipes beneath our feet. And to share easy tips to keep everything flowing smoothly.
The message’s easy to remember: flush only the 3 Ps – pee, poo, and paper. Everything else, especially wet wipes, belongs in the bin. Even wipes that say “flushable” don’t break down like toilet paper and cause big problems in our sewers.
Rachael Brown, Senior Community Development Officer at Cambridgeshire ACRE, has been out and about in Soham, including at the History Fair on 12 July. She ran a fun “toilet through the ages” quiz that got people chatting, and even had her stall endorsed by Queen Victoria! Most folks said they’d never flush wipes, though a few admitted they had before — mostly because the packaging said it was fine to do so. That just shows how important it is to keep sharing the right info.

Rachael will be supporting the campaign throughout the summer, so keep an eye out. You can find out more about her work here: https://cambsacre.org.uk/just-bin-it-soham.
If other communities want to tackle wipe problems too, Anglian Water offers a free toolkit with posters and social media resources. Groups can request materials or get in touch with Rachael for advice at rachael.brown@cambsacre.org.uk.
It’s a simple message with a big impact. By binning the right things and not flushing or pouring them down the sink, we protect our homes, save money, and look after our environment. Let’s keep Soham’s, and everyone’s, pipes flowing. Just bin it!
