As Senior Community Development Officer, I help communities take pride in their local environment and feel confident caring for it.

 

Communities feel more connected to their local rivers and green spaces, with the confidence and motivation to look after them together. I support people to take practical action in the places they live, helping turn shared spaces into something they value, use and care for.

I work alongside volunteers, community groups and partners to improve local water environments. This might involve supporting activity at river locks, organising litter picks or sharing knowledge through talks and projects. My approach is about bringing people together in a way that feels accessible, positive and worthwhile, so that more people want to take part and stay involved.

This work matters because rural communities often rely on volunteers to sustain local places and services. Strong local engagement helps tackle isolation, builds skills and supports long‑term stewardship of shared environments. By connecting people and encouraging participation, Cambridgeshire ACRE helps communities respond to challenges and make the most of what they have.

A moment that mattered to me

“During a school project in Wisbech, children grew and cooked their own vegetables. After harvesting turnips, one boy told me, “I can’t get enough of these turnips!” It was a simple moment, but it showed how hands‑on experiences can genuinely change attitudes.”
