Community Building Governance & Policies
Keeping your community building running well: practical support, ready-to-use policies and the value of membership
Running a village hall or community building is about more than maintaining a space. It is about creating somewhere people feel safe, welcome and connected. Behind that sits governance – one of the most important, and often most challenging, areas for trustees.
Strong governance brings clarity, consistency and confidence. It supports sound decision-making, manages risk and helps build trust with communities and funders. Policies are central to this, but knowing where to start can feel overwhelming.
Practical support for trustees
Through our Community Buildings Advice Service, Cambridgeshire ACRE supports trustees across the county to run well-managed, resilient spaces. Our approach is practical and proportionate. Not every hall needs everything at once, and trying to do so can create unnecessary pressure.
Instead, we help you prioritise and take manageable steps towards stronger governance.
Why policies matter
Policies help you meet legal requirements, align with Charity Commission expectations, manage risks and demonstrate good practice. Yet many committees struggle to develop and maintain them. Documents can feel technical or disconnected from day-to-day running, and are often not reviewed regularly, which creates risk over time.
Regular review is essential to keep your building compliant and effective.
A new suite of tailored policy templates
To make this easier, we have developed a comprehensive set of policy templates, available to Cambridgeshire ACRE members. These are:
- Written in plain English
- Designed specifically for community buildings
- Updated to reflect current guidance
- Easy to adapt for your hall
They cover both essential requirements such as health and safety, safeguarding and data protection, and wider good practice areas including hiring, complaints and risk management.
A realistic, step-by-step approach
We encourage a flexible approach. You can:
- Use templates as a starting point
- Compare them with what you already have
- Focus on your most important gaps first
There is no expectation to do everything at once. The aim is steady progress towards confident, compliant governance.
More than templates
Templates are only part of the picture. Our team can advise on which policies you need, how to adapt them and how to demonstrate compliance. If you would like support, contact Lisa Chambers via lisa.chambers@cambsacre.org.uk.
Why membership matters
Membership gives you access to practical tools, up-to-date guidance and ongoing advice, helping you reduce risk and save time. The result is simple: less time spent on paperwork, and more time supporting your community.
A more realistic view of governance
Good governance is not about the volume of paperwork. It is about clarity, proportion, regular review and shared understanding. Well-designed, usable policies support this. Overly complex or unused documents do not.
Take the next step
Members can access the full policy suite in the members’ area. If you are not yet a member, this is an opportunity to strengthen your governance with tailored support.
