Celebrating our Anglian Waterways Volunteers: a season of dedication and community

As the boating season draws to a close, it’s the perfect moment to celebrate the remarkable contribution of the Anglian Waterways Volunteers. This year, 36 volunteers gave more than 1,200 hours to support boaters, keep our locks running smoothly and make the River Great Ouse a welcoming place for everyone. Their cheerful presence, practical help and local knowledge have made a real difference not just to boaters but to the wider community too.

The impact of these volunteers is felt in countless ways. Whether it’s offering a reassuring word to someone navigating their first lock, sharing advice about river conditions or simply creating a friendly atmosphere at busy times, their efforts help make the river safer and more enjoyable for all. This season, volunteers assisted 81 boats through the lock on the busiest day, managed 209 locking shifts and responded to more than 150 pieces of feedback from grateful boaters. Many said they “couldn’t have managed without them” and described the volunteers as “extremely helpful, friendly and efficient.”

This spirit of service was celebrated at our end-of-season thank you event, co-hosted with the Environment Agency. Volunteers gathered for an evening of Sri Lankan curry cooked by Frank, one of our own, puddings, music and a lively game of bingo. It was a chance to reflect on the season’s achievements, share stories and simply enjoy each other’s company. The event was a small token of appreciation for the big difference these volunteers make.

The Anglian Waterways Volunteer scheme is a true partnership. Funded by the Environment Agency and delivered with Cambridgeshire ACRE, it shows what’s possible when organisations and communities work together. Volunteers extend the reach of the EA, help maintain high standards of safety and support the local economy by assisting boaters and preventing damage to hire boats. For every pound invested, the scheme delivers £5.84 of social value, strengthening community connections and making the river more accessible for all.

This work is a living example of Cambridgeshire ACRE’s strategy in action. It empowers local people, fosters collaboration and builds stronger, more resilient communities. By supporting wellbeing, reducing isolation and protecting our environment, the volunteers help deliver on our shared vision: rural communities where people flourish, connections grow and everyone can thrive.

As Rachael, our Senior Community Development Officer, says:

“I can’t tell you how fond I am of our Anglian Waterways Volunteers. They’re not really ‘mine’ but after nine years managing this scheme for the Environment Agency, it feels like they are. I am so proud of everything they achieve and the difference they make every season.”

Thank you to each and every volunteer. You are the reason our rivers and our rural communities continue to thrive.
