The power of slow cooking: affordable, nutritious meals for everyone
In this blog, Rachel Mason, Cambridgeshire ACRE’s Community Wellbeing Manager explores how her team of Village Agents have taken on the challenge of demonstrating the power of slow cooking.
At Cambridgeshire ACRE, we’re always looking for practical ways to support our rural communities – especially when it comes to making healthy, affordable food accessible to all. As Community Wellbeing Manager, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many people at our community hubs who are keen to eat well but face real challenges: rising food prices, limited cooking facilities and the need to make every penny count.
One solution that’s making a real difference is the humble slow cooker. If you’re on a tight budget or rely on food banks, a slow cooker can be a game-changer, helping you prepare tasty, nutritious meals with minimal fuss and energy costs.
The main funder of our Village Agent programme in Cambridgeshire, Cadent, have challenged us with showing people how to cook using a slow cooker. They want to help people reduce their energy bills and to maximise their income. So the challenge for me and my team was simple – take slow cookers into our community hubs, show people how to cook hearty and nutritious meals and give away slow cookers to those who need them.
Why choose a slow cooker?
- Save money on energy and ingredients – Slow cookers use very little electricity, often less than a standard light bulb. That means you can cook a whole meal for your family for just a few pence in energy. Because slow cookers work best with cheaper cuts of meat, dried beans and root vegetables, you can make hearty meals from affordable ingredients, many of which are available from food banks or community larders.
- Reduce food waste – It’s easy to use up odds and ends from your fridge or cupboard in a slow cooker. Wilted carrots, a handful of lentils or leftover cooked chicken can all be transformed into a delicious stew or soup. This helps you stretch your food further and cut down on waste.
- Nutritious and warming – Slow cooking gently brings out the flavours in your food and helps retain nutrients. Meals like casseroles, soups and curries are naturally filling and comforting – perfect for colder days or when you need something wholesome.
- Simple and convenient – You don’t need to be a confident cook to use a slow cooker. Just add your ingredients, switch it on and let it do the work. There’s no need to stand over the stove, so you can get on with your day while dinner cooks itself.
- Great for batch cooking – Slow cookers are ideal for making larger portions. You can freeze leftovers for another day, saving time and money in the long run.
Making slow cooking accessible
At Cambridgeshire ACRE, the Village Agent team are rolling out slow cooker demonstrations at our community hubs. These sessions are a chance to see a slow cooker in action, ask questions and pick up recipe ideas. If you’re interested in learning more, please come along to your local hub or get in touch with us.
In putting this blog together I asked my colleagues their experiences of using a slow cooker. Here’s what our Chief Executive, Hayley Neal, had to say:
“As a busy working mum, I rely on my slow cooker. I love getting up early on a Sunday morning and putting a whole chicken in it – then heading out for the day, knowing that when I get home all I need to do is boil some veg and we have an easy roast dinner with plenty of chicken left for the next day. It’s really succulent and keeps the flavour beautifully. My top tip for stews and soups? Watch how much water you put in – you need surprisingly little for veg to steam, and nothing is worse than a watery stew!”
We know that times are tough for many, but together, we can find practical solutions that make a real difference. Slow cooking is just one way we can help each other eat well, save money and build stronger, healthier communities.
