A day in the life of a Fenland Village Agent

In this short blog, Fenland Village Agent, Lucille Bingham, gives some insight into how she spends her days.
No two days are ever the same – and that’s exactly why I love this job. Being a Village Agent is all about people, community, and being that friendly face someone can turn to when they need a bit of help or advice.
Here’s what a “typical” day might look like… if there is such a thing!
🕗 8.00am – Emails and planning
I start the day by checking emails and planning out visits. There’s always a list of enquiries to follow up on – from benefits and housing to transport and support services.
🏘️ 10.00am – Community hub visit
I support five fantastic community hubs (my brilliant colleague, Lisa, covers the other five). At each hub, I’m a familiar face – someone people know they can chat to if they’ve got a worry or need advice. That friendly, informal setting helps people open up.
☕ Tea, cake and real conversations
There are always free refreshments (and usually cake — dangerous territory for the waistline!). Topics of the day can range from Blue Badges and respite care to how to join a keep-fit class. It’s never the same but it’s always rewarding.
🕛 Midday – Home to follow up
Back at home, I spend the afternoon chasing up information, researching queries from the morning, and checking in on ongoing clients. I’ve built a wonderful network of contacts across Fenland – local services, charities, and professionals – all ready to help when someone needs it.
🎤 Planning guest visits
I also help organise pop-in visits to the hubs – like the Fire Community Officer offering free home checks, St John Ambulance giving defib demos, or even a local line dancing session! Little extras like these make our hubs feel even more welcoming and connected.
🕞 3.30pm – Laptop off… mostly!
I try to wrap up admin by mid-afternoon – but the day doesn’t always end there. In the evening, I often join community group catch-ups over Teams. It’s a great way to stay in the loop with what’s going on across Fenland and find new opportunities for residents.
