Staff Blog: Why village halls should take part in Hallmark

For her final blog of 2025’s Village Halls Week, Community Development Officer, Lisa, explains what the Hallmark Accreditation Scheme is and why she think every village hall should take part.
Village halls and community buildings are the beating heart of rural life in Cambridgeshire. Some host everything from yoga classes and toddler groups to social events and parish council meetings. But running a community building involves much more than just unlocking the doors. From governance to maintenance, there’s a lot to manage. That’s where the Hallmark Accreditation Scheme can make a real difference and also support the volunteers in their role.
What is the Hallmark Accreditation Scheme?
The Hallmark Scheme is a nationally recognised quality standard for village halls and community buildings. It provides a practical framework to help halls improve their processes and procedures, further ensure legal compliance, but also demonstrate excellence to funders, users, and the wider community.
Why should your hall get involved?
- Gain Recognition for Best Practices: The Hallmark Scheme celebrates good management, effective governance, and community engagement. Achieving accreditation demonstrates that your hall is run to a high standard, but also gives confidence to funders, users, and volunteers.
- Ensure Legal Compliance: The scheme helps trustees navigate their legal requirements, from governance to health and safety, ensuring your hall operates safely and responsibly.
- Boost Volunteer Confidence: Accreditation recognises the hard work of trustees and volunteers, providing a sense of pride and accomplishment. It could also help attract new volunteers by showcasing your hall’s commitment to excellence.
- Improve Day-to-Day Operations: The Hallmark Scheme offers guidance on everything from hiring your hall but also reviewing the policies, helping you run your hall more efficiently and effectively.
- Strengthen Community Trust: Accreditation shows your community that their local hall is a reliable, well-managed asset, encouraging greater participation and engagement.
How does the Hallmark Scheme work?
The scheme is structured around three levels: Hallmark 1 focuses on governance, management, and community involvement. Hallmark 2 looks at health and safety, security, and licensing. Finally, Hallmark 3 examines community activities, sustainability, and forward planning. Each level is assessed by trained peer reviewers or visitors as we like to call them, who provide both constructive feedback and practical advice to help your hall improve.
How do I get started?
Joining the Hallmark Scheme is straightforward:
- Contact our Village Halls Advisor: Receive guidance on how to apply and prepare for the accreditation process. They will work with you throughout the process.
- Complete a Self-Assessment Checklist: Use the Hallmark checklist to review your hall’s policies, procedures, and practices.
- Book an Assessment Visit: Our visitors will come along to your hall and offer advice, but also assess your eligibility for accreditation. They will produce a report with recommendations are share this with you.
- Celebrate Your Achievement: Once accredited, promote your success to your community and further use your Hallmark status to unlock new opportunities.
By joining the Hallmark Accreditation Scheme, Cambridgeshire’s village halls and community buildings can demonstrate their commitment to excellence. This can attract more users but also set you on a solid footing to secure a sustainable future.
