Earth Day River Litter Pick in Ramsey

On a litter pick last April,  Ramsey RiverCare volunteers paused their work when they spotted a swan nesting quietly on the High Lode (river/drain at the Tesco end of Town).  Litter pickers moved carefully around the area, leaving the nest undisturbed while clearing plastic and rubbish from the surrounding bank. It was a simple moment, but it captured exactly what RiverCare is about: protecting wildlife by taking care of the places it depends on.

Every bag of litter we collect is one less hazard for wildlife and one small step towards a healthier river for everyone”  Rachael Deas, Group leader.

This year, Earth Day falls on Wednesday 22 April, and Ramsey RiverCare will be marking it in the best possible way, with a community litter pick along the river.

Earth Day has been celebrated for over 50 years and reminds us that environmental care does not just happen on a global scale. It happens locally, through small, practical actions. Rivers like the High Lode/Bury Brook are a vital part of Ramsey’s landscape, supporting wildlife and providing a valued space for walking, boating and time outdoors. When litter is left nearby, it is easily washed into the water, where it can harm wildlife or be carried downstream.

Ramsey RiverCare volunteers regularly share photos of the surprising things they find during litter picks, from endless drink cans to larger, unexpected items. Just as often, they share the positive results: clearer riverbanks, safer spaces for wildlife and paths that people can enjoy again.

By holding a litter pick on Earth Day, the group is linking global awareness with local action. It is a reminder that caring for the planet often starts with caring for one stretch of river.
