As Cambridgeshire ACRE’s Rural Health and Wellbeing Manager, I make support accessible for people often overlooked in rural communities.

People in Fenland are better able to access practical support, connect with others and feel less alone during difficult times. Whether facing cancer, financial hardship or limited opportunities as a young person, I help ensure services reach those who might otherwise fall through the gaps.

I lead a range of wellbeing projects, working directly with communities through events, local partnerships and one-to-one support. This includes helping people access grants to manage fuel debt, building local cancer support networks and raising awareness of youth hubs. I spend time listening to what people need and working alongside them to shape services that are accessible and relevant.

This work matters because rural communities often face additional barriers, from limited transport to fewer local services. By strengthening local support networks and responding directly to community needs, we help reduce isolation and improve access to essential support. It also contributes to a more resilient system where people are better connected and able to support one another.

A moment that mattered to me

“I helped set up a new cancer support group in Chatteris, where access had been limited. At the first session, people shared how grateful they were to finally have local support. It was a powerful reminder that small, local interventions can make a real difference at a difficult time.”
