My role as a Village Agent – supporting Community Hubs in Cambridgeshire
Our Community Development Officer, Lisa Chambers, is also a Village Agent, engaging with Community Hubs in Cambridgeshire during the week. In this blog, Lisa speaks about her role and the positive impact it has.
Being a Cambridgeshire ACRE Village Agent and visiting the network of Community Hubs in Cambridgeshire is more than just a role to me. Being able to connect with people while building relationships and supporting the hub volunteers in their communities is essential.
What is a Village Agent?
Village Agents act as the bridge between individuals and vital services. We are here to support people in navigating life’s challenges. Whether it’s accessing advice on housing, health and social care services, blue badge applications or providing a listening ear, our role goes beyond just providing practical support. Building trust and making sure people find the services and support they need and require is a main focus.
Supporting People, One Conversation at a Time
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a Village Agent is helping people overcome barriers. Sometimes, this involves something as simple as helping someone fill out a form or accessing online services. Other times, it’s about having meaningful conversations that uncover deeper challenges, such as loneliness, financial hardship, or health issues.
No two days are the same. You might start the day finding community transport for a resident to attend a medical appointment and end it by supporting a someone to complete an online application for attendance allowance. The key is listening and being proactive. Taking the time to understand what people need and finding ways to help them navigate their way through their problems can go a long way.
Attending Community Hubs
Community hubs are a lifeline for many people across Cambridgeshire’s rural areas. Being part of them is central to our work as Village Agents. These hubs bring together residents, organisations, and resources in a welcoming space, creating opportunities for social connections and learning, whilst offering support.
As a Village Agent, attending hubs is an important part of my role. I’m there to offer advice, answer questions, and connect individuals with the right services. But it’s also about building relationships—sharing a cup of tea, chatting with attendees, and helping the volunteers to create a safe, friendly space where everyone feels welcome.
Community Hubs are where neighbours catch up, friendships are formed and communities’ connections strengthen. It’s a privilege to witness the positive impact the hubs have on people’s lives.
It’s great to be able to celebrate successes with the volunteers at the hub. Seeing an attendee gain confidence through a new activity they do at the hub or seeing someone’s health situation improve as they now have access to the right people to speak to is a feeling like no other.
