Supporting safer waterways through partnership and volunteering
Cambridgeshire ACRE has been pleased to support the Environment Agency in delivering the latest round of training for the Anglian Waterways Volunteering Scheme, welcoming a new cohort of volunteers preparing to assist on local waterways this summer.
The training, held at the Environment Agency’s office in Brampton and at a nearby lock, saw 13 volunteers complete core induction, with a further three due to follow. Together, they will play an important role in supporting safe and efficient navigation during the busy boating season.

Building skills and confidence
The training programme covered a range of essential topics, including:
- Safe use of lifejackets
- Manual handling
- Managing challenging or high-pressure situations
- Understanding how the volunteering scheme operates
- Supporting boats safely through locks
A key strength of the session was the involvement of experienced volunteers, who worked alongside new recruits at the locks to demonstrate practical skills. This peer-led approach helps build confidence quickly while reinforcing consistent, safe practice.
Even during training, the value of calm and capable support was evident. Volunteers assisted as boats navigated the lock, including one helmed by a less experienced boater. The situation highlighted how trained volunteers can reduce pressure, improve safety and contribute to a more positive experience for all waterway users.

Extending the reach of public services
The Anglian Waterways Volunteering Scheme demonstrates how partnership working can enhance the delivery of statutory services. By combining the Environment Agency’s technical expertise with structured volunteer support, the scheme:
- Increases operational capacity during peak periods
- Helps maintain safe and efficient waterways
- Strengthens community involvement in public assets
- Builds local skills and resilience
This model reflects a broader shift towards collaborative delivery, where volunteers play a defined and supported role alongside professionals rather than acting as a substitute for them.
How Cambridgeshire ACRE supports delivery
Cambridgeshire ACRE works with statutory agencies and community organisations to design and deliver volunteer programmes that are practical, sustainable and aligned to organisational goals. Our support includes:
- Developing structured volunteer roles and training pathways
- Advising on safe and effective delivery models
- Supporting recruitment, coordination and retention
- Strengthening links between services and local communities
This ensures that volunteer schemes add genuine value, rather than creating additional risk or operational pressure.

Looking ahead
With the new cohort now trained and ready to begin, the scheme is well placed to support a busy summer season on the waterways. We would like to thank all those involved in delivering the training, as well as the volunteers who have committed their time and energy to supporting others.
